Tiyo tested wheelchair components
Experience from the automotive industry is also being applied to the testing of medical devices. The Hořice laboratory is collaborating with Delfi Rehab, a world-leading manufacturer of wheelchair wheels.

The Tiyo laboratory has formed a partnership with Delfi Rehab, a manufacturer of medical technology components. It tested the suspension wheel hubs on a unique piece of equipment designed and assembled for this test by its developers in Hořice. This is yet another example of applying technical know-how from the automotive industry to another sector.
For Tiyo, the project presented an interesting technical challenge. While testing procedures in the automotive industry are typically defined by standards, such standards often do not exist for wheelchair wheel components; therefore, the team drew on technically related fields.
“In collaboration with the wheelchair manufacturer, we had to devise the entire testing procedure from scratch. We designed and assembled a special system of motors and measuring devices that simulates the actual load on the wheelchair in the field,” explains Tiyo’s sales director, Tomáš Mihulka.

Improved functionality of parts
Delfi Rehab is based in Dolní Štěpanice near Jilemnice and exports to more than 40 countries worldwide. The company’s flagship product is the REHA program - the production of complete wheels for wheelchairs.
The production program is complemented by other machined products, particularly folding shovels for cars and spacer bars used as bathroom fixtures.
According to Technical Director Petr Janků, Delfi Rehab expects the involvement of an accredited laboratory to further increase the efficiency, functionality, and quality of its parts.
“We are constantly striving to improve our products. We will also apply the knowledge we’ve gained to the development of conventional spoked wheels, which are a key component of our production program.”
Suspension hubs dampen vibrations and improve ride comfort. “Compared to a rigid wheel, the difference is enormous, especially when riding with a motor. The suspension helps reduce health problems such as pressure sores, spasms, and bruises, and also provides relief to people who have undergone craniotomy surgery, for example,” explains Petr Janků.
“We strive to improve the quality of life and boost the vitality of people with disabilities. Thanks to this, they are able to travel much longer distances, and fatigue sets in later,” he adds.
For Tiyo, the project with Delfi Rehab is another step in its long-term strategy to expand its development testing facility portfolio. The goal is to transfer testing experience and standards to other industries.
“Our aim is to ensure that high-quality, proven products reach the market. The collaboration with Delfi Rehab fits perfectly into this approach,” notes Tomáš Mihulka.
