New reaction container to enable dynamic battery testing
Tiyo is preparing to commission a third reaction container for testing uncontrolled battery reactions. This will increase the testing capacity for battery cells and modules.
Test engineers and technicians will now be able to perform dynamic battery tests and other abuse tests requiring enhanced safety measures.
The Hořice laboratory acquired its first reaction container, featuring steel walls and a fire suppression system, several years ago. Growing customer demand for high-risk battery testing necessitated an investment in further expansion of the „battery town”. This will enable more tests to be conducted simultaneously and reduce wait times for testing.
„The capacity of the existing reaction container was no longer sufficient for us, and we also have customer requests for dynamic battery tests that we haven‘t been able to perform until now,” explains Michal Rašek, head of the battery testing team. Dynamic tests simulate a sudden impact. They use various shapes of impactors that strike the battery cells. The impact speed is measured, and the test also includes a camera inspection.
The new container was custom-built for the Hořice laboratory. „It has a reinforced floor to accommodate dynamic testing. We plan to use it for other types of stress tests as well, such as short-circuit tests,“ notes Michal Rašek.
Technicians have been putting the container, which is more than four meters long and over three meters wide, into operation since the end of March. They have installed insulation on the exterior, are setting up exhaust vents, and are connecting equipment for a six-stage filtration system consisting of metal and pocket filters, activated carbon, and zeolite.
The container will be equipped with measurement technology, lighting, and a camera system, including a thermal camera. The existing control room will serve both adjacent reaction containers. Once equipped, the first test runs will follow. „We aim to have the container fully operational by May,“ says the head of the battery testing team.
Tiyo has been testing traction battery cells and modules since 2020. Initially, cyclic and functional tests were conducted using a controlled power source. The „battery town” also includes a container with a pressure-tight chamber with a volume of nearly 500 liters designed for testing battery thermal runaway, as well as a logistics or decontamination container.
