Climate chambers: guarantee of automotive parts reliability

There's no room for compromises in the automotive industry. A car must function reliably in arctic winter and on a scorching Saharan road. That's why car manufacturers and their suppliers need to thoroughly test their parts before introducing them into serial production. And that's exactly what our park of climate and shock chambers is for.

 

Why test in climate chambers at all

The automotive industry has been facing challenging demands for a long time. Whether it's the increasing complexity of electronic components, the introduction of new materials and manufacturing processes, changes in safety standards, or the needs of markets with extremely different climatic conditions. Climate testing of parts is simply a necessity that no car manufacturer can do without.

Climate Testing Capabilities

In our laboratories, we operate an extensive park of climate chambers, which is one of the largest in Central Europe. We have more than 50 chambers of various sizes, allowing us to adapt testing to the requirements of each project. Our chambers simulate temperatures from arctic -70 °C to tropical +180 °C. For special applications, we use hot air ovens that can develop temperatures up to +300 °C.

In addition to temperature extremes, we can also simulate various levels of humidity, ranging from 10-90 % at temperatures from +10 °C to +90 °C. For testing large parts or entire vehicles, we use our largest chamber with impressive dimensions of 5 x 7 x 3 meters and a floor load capacity of 1,800 kg.

Specialized shock testing is provided by four chambers that can expose tested parts to extreme temperature changes ranging from -80 °C to +250 °C. These chambers with volumes from 120 to 1000 liters and a load capacity of up to 50 kg are primarily used for testing smaller parts and electronic components.

What we test in chambers

We use our testing equipment for comprehensive testing of automotive components. We test exterior parts exposed to direct weather effects as well as interior components that must withstand temperature fluctuations in the vehicle cabin. We pay special attention to electronic systems and mechanical assemblies that undergo demanding temperature shocks. Using pneumatic or electric actuators, we perform performance and load tests. Measuring deformations and monitoring dimensional stability of parts is also part of our portfolio.

Measurement and data analysis

During each test, we collect and evaluate extensive data sets. We measure applied forces and torques, monitor displacements and accelerations of individual parts. We continuously monitor temperature profiles and, using advanced photogrammetry, we record even the smallest dimensional changes of tested parts. This data helps our customers optimize design and manufacturing processes.
